The reroofing Process, materials, and warranty
The focus of this layout is on educating the public about how to tell if you need a new roof, how a house is reroofed, the steps involved, the materials used and the peace of mind with a warranty.
What are the sighs that your roof is needing replaced or is past its life expectancy?

Shingle Removal
The reroofing process starts with the tear off removal and disposal of all the shingles and debris.
This can be a messy process; some companies throw all the shingles to the ground to be picked up later or from other workers.
These are a few methods we use at Rottweiler Roofing to keep the ground clean and clear making sure no debris gets in your yard, grass, landscape, sidewalks and driveway.

This photo shows how we install a 2 by 8 to catch any shingle or debris from falling off the roof. Also, we have roof jacks with a 2 by 8 for fall protection and to freely walk and stand across the entire bottom of the roof. All of the shingles go directly into the trailor not the ground or yard.

This photo shows how we position the trailer to be able to take the old shingles from roof to trailer. We also have plywood covering the gutters to protect them from scratches or damage.
Deck or plywood inspection.
Deck inspection consists of inspecting for nails that need pulled, hit in or spots that need more attention, there can be rotten wood that needs replaced, warped wood that needs to be floated with water shield or metal sheeting to ensure the warping will not show in the finished product, loose wood that needs to be re nailed because the nails have rusted or were never installed to begin with, loose corners are common. All of which need to be attended to. Rotten or soft wood leads to blowoffs, since the nails are not hitting solid wood, the wind can easily blow them off. The deck inspection is a step that cannot be ignored. After the inspection the decking is swept and cleaned to make a smooth and clean surface.
This step is not able to be done on an overlay or a second layer of shingles since the original layer of shingles are not removed the deck inspection is impossible to do. This is why an overlay, or second layer of shingles is not recommended by shingle manufactures.
Improper flashing or no flashing in a necessary area.
Shingles tight to protrusion without a waterway left around the object for way for the water to get around the object without being forced under the shingles.
Loose nails that do not hit solid decking freely move up and down let water in.
Improper shingle installation, two or more rows ending at the same place.
Improper lapping of shingles around or at protrusions, in valleys around chimneys or swamp coolers.
Rusted nails from moisture trapped under the shingles, or a ponding issue where water stands and doesn't drain correctly.

The next pictures show the decking inspection finished and cleaned. There were two layers of shingles on the roof with moisture trapped in between and under the shingles causing the nails that hold the plywood to rust away. We re nailed all of the plywood.
How your decking goes Bad
Moisture, Moisture and trapped moisture. Water penetrating past or under the shingles stuck to evaporate, then condense back into water with nowhere to escape trapped in a cycle that leads to Dry Rot, rotting from getting wet and drying out continually.
How water gets traped under the shingles

The waterway its importance and the job that it serves.
The waterway is a way for the water to go around the protrusion without getting forced under the shingles without a way out, essentially making a trap to hold the water in.

Here there is no waterway, and tar is actually sealing the water in, all too often we find that the entire base has turned to rust under the shingles

You can see the water marks from water running under the shingles. We wrap the chimney in water shield (black product) to ensure that even if water gets under the shingles in that area the water will be forced back on top of the shingles averting any possible leak.

Now there is a waterway installed around the chimney so water can get around without being forced under the shingles being trapped, also we have water shield under the entire area lapping back on top of the shingles.
This is how the chimney flange can rust with moisture trapped under the shingles. The plywood was warped and all the nails from that point down were completely rusted, a gust of wind could have taken a big section of roof off.

An explanation of Floaters
Floaters are used to smooth out any inconsistency in the flatness of the decking. What happens is that moisture gets to the plywood making a condition that lets the plywood warp, usually on the seam between the studs. There are clips known as H clips that go in that area to stop this condition from happening, the problem is that older houses do not have H clips. There are also areas usually at angle changes that dip down and come back up creating what we call ponding; these areas must be floated to assure the integrity of the roof.

This is why we call it ponding the water will actually make a puddle of water.

Water shield
Water shield is an important part of any roof, we use it on any slope that is under shingle manufactures recommendation. Anything under 4 inches high by 12 inches long, better known as a 4/12 pitch. It is also recommended in the valleys; we also use it anywhere that could use extra protection such as protrusions like chimneys, swamp coolers, vents and pipe boots.
Underlayment known as Synthetic felt
Synthetic felt protects the deck from moisture and protects the structural integrity of the home by keeping it dry, without it your house would be in jeopardy of getting wet and letting moisture in. It also protects the decking while the roof is exposed to the elements during the reroofing process.

Drip edge
Drip edge keeps the water drips off of the edge of the roof defending off water damage from the edge of the roof known as rakes. At the bottom of the roof the drip edge helps or coaxes the water from going behind the gutters and once again defends from water damage at the bottom of the roof.

Shingle brands
Not all shingle brands are equal!
We will not be mentioning any brands in this section. This information is not for brand slamming or intentionally negatively harming the name of any brand.

These are a few reasons why we believe that we stand above the Crowd in the roofing industry.
Our warranty

Our comprehensive warranty clearly states that it is transfers with any change of ownership. The warranty guarantees our craftmanship and the integrity of the materials used. We will promptly fix any leaks or blowoffs. The warranty does not cover matters like manufacture defects, unauthorized repairs or damage due to natural disasters.
The Rottweiler Roofing stamp of approval.
These are a few techniques that we use to ensure that our roofs are reroofed to the highest expectations and quality standards
Install flashing where needed or missing
Generic shingles
The generic brands are often considered a 12-year shingle. We have read the warranties of these brands and found a lot of big fancy words jumping around pointing directions all the while not really making a solid promise, there were no clear or concise warranty besides mentioning something about 10-year something.
Name brand shingles
These shingles clearly state that they have a 25-year stain and Alge resistance, after that they seem to go in different directions without being totally clear. Some brands are making a bold statement, but you have to understand that this number is calculated by the best case senecio, or perfect conditions and we all know that we don't live under perfect conditions. We consider them to be 25-year plus.
Our No Leak Promise

Flashing installed
.jpg)
This is at the bottom of a valley it is apparent that water has been getting under the shingles in this area, no water shield in the valley for extra protection and no flashing in this area.
.jpg)
This is a photograph of that same area, water stains up under the edge of the roof where there was no flashing. Water stains are visible where no water should get to.
.jpg)
Protrusion painting
This is our no leak promise, it consists of water shield wrapped around any protrusion through the roof lapped on top of the shingles, so any water is forced back on top of the shingles.
