Replacing a rusted chimney collar

Michael Stewart

These collars are not always available to replace.

This is a step-by-step look into how we handle this situation.

We will show you how to build a Rottweiler Roofing (original) Flat Collar.

You start by removing the collar without pulling or twisting the chimney tube often times it isn't connected to anything, and you can disconnect it inside without knowing. We always hold the chimney tube sturdy while removing the collar.

Rusted chimney collar

We held the chimney tube in place with aluminum straps and roofed up to it.

We also took the opportunity to paint it to protect it and it looks nice

stabilizing the chimney in place.

We installed water shield around the chimney and made two identical plates with heavy gauge aluminum. The first one has the slit going up the roof, it is important that the first plate slit goes up hill. The slits are from cutting the circle out.

First flat collar installed.

The second plate slit goes down the hill making a complete watertight collar. this method works well for things like power poles, power lines and water lines. Anything that you cannot slide a new collar from the top down.

The second flat collar is installed.

A waterway was left around the chimney. Its purpose is a way for the water to run around the chimney otherwise if the shingles were tight against the chimney the water could find its way in and under the shingles with no way out. Waterways are needed around any protrusion through the roof. The last thing to be done is a bead of sealant around the pipe at the roof level. This fix is permanent and will last for roof after roof.

The finished product.

This Method is a Rottweiler Roofing original we have never seen this fix done by any other company. Usually, the fix is a big wad of tar looking gross and is not professional. No tar should be used on a new roof for any reason.
